In colder states such as Minnesota and North Dakota growers must often seek shelter in their basement to do their growing. For many the most secure place on one’s property is their basement, it is here that a relative amount of heat can be sustained. Shelter from the elements is one benefit of setting up a grow room in the basement, the other of course is that it can be almost completely separate from your home. There won’t be any clunky equipment to congest your home’s decorative potential since it will all be out of sight and out of mind. The added benefit to housing a grow room in the basement is that it will be close to a furnace (usually) and as a result all the heat will not have to come from the lighting.
In a basement environment more so than just about any other ventilation is extremely important; since plants consume air at a high rate having a couple dozen breathing the same air without ventilation is a very bad idea. Ventilation systems emerging from a basement are usually networked through the homes existing heating/cooling systems. This involves closing off a route through the existing ventilation system that reaches the outside of the home. The open vent present on the outside of the home will have a fan or pump present to route air back into the grow room. Having a route traced back to the outside of the home to expel air is also necessary to remove the exhaled oxygen left by plants.
Since basements are dark places lighting is especially important to implement so that plants receive enough nourishment. Setting up a lighting system in a basement can be much easier than in other parts of the house, and this is due to the often low hanging ceilings seen in basements. These low ceilings can easily have networks of lighting set up seamlessly since it is easy to install shelves from which lights can hang. This easy application of lighting with regard to the proximity to the plants means that raising and lowering of lights can be easily adjusted as plants grow. You do not want to have a light too close to an adult plant and likewise do not want your light too far away from a seedling.
Basement grow rooms are perfect for those looking to establish a grow room in a hostile climate, and they provide the shelter necessary for plants to thrive no matter the conditions outside. This type of opportunity is present in most homes and makes growing in a basement grow room a commonly overlooked opportunity. Basement grow rooms are excellent ways to cut down on your energy bill where growing is concerned, and on top of this the nature of a basement where condensing light is concerned is extremely useful. Using a hydroponic setup in an underground grow room is the best way to go since will cut down on costs associated with both upkeep and waste. The biggest concern about a basement grow room is the chance of contamination, be sure to look around for any mold or insects and neutralize them prior to beginning your endeavor.
